- This material was downloaded in May 1984 from TRADENET, which is a
- network primarily consisting of user groups, mainly the dBASEII user
- group. This material is solely intended to provide current users a
- clean copy of the network documentation, and to demonstrate the major
- features for potential users. DO NOT USE THIS INFO FOR ANY
- COMMERCIAL - some or all of it may be copyrighted by TRADENET.
-
- TRADENET membership through the dBASE II Users Group costs $25
- membership initiation fee, with hourly connect charges explained in
- the material below.
-
- TRADENET uses UNINET communications services. The sign-on procedures
- are, for IBM PC's:
-
- 1. Dial into the local Uninet service. In St. Louis, the
- Uninet number is 314-878-7705, for 300 and 1200 baud.
- 2. At the first SERVICE prompt type "prof3<enter>". This
- tells Uninet to adjust for the IBM PC's data comm
- requirements.
- 3. At the second SERVICE prompt type "tdn<enter>". This
- tells Uninet to connect you to TRADENET.
- 4. At the appropriate prompts, enter your user id and
- password.
-
- You can reach TRADENET at:

- ------------------------------------------------------------
- 09.20.83 The main dBASEII menu for this association will be
- changing to a new format sometime in October.
- The new format will display last update time/date
- of each updatable menu selection. We will be using
- letter groups for selections instead of numbers.
-
- Due to the ANSWER feature not working properly in
- the Q&A forum, the entire forum software has been
- re-written and will be implemented soon also. The
- new format will request answers immediately after
- reading an item.
-
- 08.15.83 The INFO system has been updated - type INFO at
- the menu prompt for update information. An INDEX
- is being added to the FREE CONTRIBUTED SOFTWARE.
- It will list program name, who submitted it and a
- brief description of content. This is currently
- a manual operation on our part, however, we are
- updating the upload program to automate this step.
-
- 06 June - Many members are forgetting to put a CARRIAGE RETURN
- at the end of each line as they enter data into the
- bulletin board and forum. When your terminal wraps
- around to a new line for you, it does not insert a
- CR. TRADENET will accept continuous strings of data
- regardless of total length - therefore, without the
- CR at the end of each line, it will treat the string
- as one line. If a user reads the file with a terminal
- that has a word-wrap feature, he will not notice the
- the problem - however, a user with a terminal that
- does not support word-wrap will see only the first
- 79 characters - all others will be displayed in the
- 80th column.
-
- If you are using 1200 baud and are experiencing buffer
- overflow or are losing data when you download, a minor
- change in your login procedure through TYMNET should
- remedy the problem. Look at the TYMNET login procedure
- in your Users Guide. Change the following line:

- *** 20 September ***
- The Rev 2.4 update has been released and seems to be shipping now. We
- have heard from many users who have (after a long wait!) received the
- update. There are many features that make this version a worthwhile
- investment. Most of the software in the commercial VOLA series will
- benefit from the improvements and are in the process of being updated.
-
- *** 25 August ***
- New INFO files have been added to the system - type INFO UPDATE2.4 for

- dBASEII ASSOCIATION QUESTIONS and ANSWERS FORUM INFORMATION Page 1
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Q&A Forum is a place for dBASE II users to pose their problems for help
- and assistance from ASHTON-TATE and the dBASE II community. The initial group
- of questions have been supplied by ASHTON-TATE as those most asked by users
- calling them.
-
- The FORUM uses commands similar to those in the Bulletin Board system.
-
- SCAN - scans the forum directory and displays the ITEM#, the original USER
- who posed the question and the DATE, the DATE of most recent answer,
- and a 30 character SUBJECT field. SCAN supports the [keyword/phrase]
- and * features as in the Bulletin Board.
-
- READ # - displays the actual question and all responses made to date. READ
- requires the ITEM # given in the SCAN command. If the ITEM # is not
- given, READ will begin with the first question in the system.
-
- ASK - to ask a question - this command is self-prompting, however, the user
- should have his question well thought out prior to entering it on the
- FORUM. Try to be concise but not criptic when deciding on the SUBJECT
-
- Press RETURN to continue or ESC to quit

- wording. The ASK function provides LIMITED line editing of the CURRENT
- LINE only. If you've made an error, you may backspace and correct on
- the current line. Once you have pressed [RETURN] - it's in the system.
- Since most users will be using microcomputers for communications, they
- should transmit an edited text file to the FORUM for both questions &
- answers - most decent communications programs provide this feature.
-
- ANS - provides any user with the ability to ADD their response to any item
- on the FORUM. The system will prompt for the ITEM number if not spec-
- ified with the command. The same edit capability exists here as with
- the ASK command.
-
-
- USING THE BULLETIN BOARD PAGE 1
- --------------------------------------
- The bulletin board commands are:
-
- SCAN - permits the user to receive an
- overall view of listed items.
- Format shows DATE,USER ID, and
- SUBJECT of entry.
-
- SCAN * - will list all entries added
- since users last login.
-
- SCAN [keyword] - will list all items
- whose SUBJECT field contains
- the KEYWORD specified. Don't
- include the brackets around
- the keyword.
-
- SCAN * [keyword] - will list only the
- items listed since the users
- last login by keyword.
-
- READ - displays an item or series of
- items in the following format:
-
- ITEM# DATE [User ID] [Subject]
-
- Text of item -------------------.
-
- READ [#] - reads a specific item by
- its ITEM number.
-
- READ [keyword] - will read ALL items
- by the specified keyword.
-
- READ * - will read all items added
- since last login.
-
- READ * [keyword] - will read items
- added since last login by
- keyword.
-
- ADD - permits a user to post an item
- to the board. It will ask for
- the SUBJECT first (limit is 20
- characters), then the TEXT.
- The text may be of any length,
- however, for readability sake
- be brief and to the point. You
- may edit the current line by
- using BACKSPACE and re-typing,
- however, once you press RETURN
- you can not go back.
-
- When you are done ADDING, type
- a $[return] as the only
- character of a new line. The
- system will prompt you to:
- ADD, RE-ENTER or QUIT.
- If you have made errors, you
- may re-enter the entire item.
-
- DELETE - only the submitting user is
- permitted to delete an item
- on the board. The system
- will request an item number
- and if the POSTING user is
- the current user, the item
- will be deleted.
-
- DELETE # - brief form of above.
-
- EXTEND - will extend the date of an
- item for another 30 days.
- Has no effect if not done
- by POSTING user.
-
- EXTEND # - brief form of above.
-
- The system will automatically delete
- all items after 30 days from posting

- This area of the system is COMMAND driven. The commands are:
-
- DIR - displays a directory of the files available in the FREE area.
-
- LIST [filename] - will LIST the contents of the named file to your terminal.
- As with dBASE II, the LIST command will list ALL without
- stopping.
-
- READ [filename] - same as LIST command except it will page every 22 lines
- and gives you to ability to ESCape after each page.
-
- UP [filename] - permits a user to upload a dBASE II CMD file from your micro
- or type it in from the keyboard. If you elect to type directly
- - be careful, the edit capability here is limited to BACKSPACE
- and re-type within the current line. Once you have pressed the
- [RETURN] key, you cannot edit the previous line. To exit the
- UPLOAD mode, type a $[RETURN] at the beginning of a new line.
- The system will ask if you wish to DELETE the file you just
- entered - anything other than a Y or y response will add your
- program to the contributed data-base. If you didn't specify
- a FILENAME with the command, the system will prompt for it.
- If the file already exists, the system will not permit using
- that name again and gives an error message to that effect.
- If you have entered a program and wish to provide an updated
- version or have more to add to the original file, make a new
- file of similar name OR send a note throught the electronic
- mail system to DBASE or TNSPHX and advise the supervisor what

- The MAIL system commands are simple & logical. You may SEND mail, SCAN your
- mailbox or READ your mail. When you select SCAN or READ, the system will
- display FROM whom the mail was sent, the DATE and TIME and a 30 character
- REFerence line to give you some idea of the contents of the letter. READ
- will then ask if you wish to read or go to the next one. Press RETURN or Y
- to read or N to scan the next entry. After reading, the system asks for a
- DISPOSITION (DElete,ForWard,SAve).
-
- DE - deletes mail with no recovery.
- FW - allows comments to be added to
- a letter and sent on to another
- user. You have no more access to
- mail that has been forwarded.
- SA - save mail to a file in your user
- area. The system requests a file
- name - if it already exists, you
- will be advised. You may add to
- or overwrite an existing file.
-
- When SENDing mail, the system asks for a REFERENCE line - up to 30 characters
- (the length of the prompt line). This is important as you will see when you
- begin using the SCAN and READ commands mentioned above. The system will now
- prompt TO: - it wants the ID code of of the recipient of your letter. New
- users - send a letter to yourself! Since you may send the same letter to
- a number of users, the prompt will repeat until you enter [RETURN] only.
-
- Entering [RETURN] without any ID codes will abort SEND - try it. The system
- will prompt you to ENTER YOUR TEXT: Type your text a line at a time and
- end each line with a [RETURN] - this is NOT a word processing system and
- has LIMITED editing capabilities on the current line only. Once you have
- pressed [RETURN], you cannot edit a previous line. If you are using a
- micro-computer, use your local editor to create a letter or document, then
- send it rather than entering from the keyboard. When you are finished, type
- a $[RETURN] at the beginning of a new line. The system will respond with
- MAIL SENT and reprompts with the mail command list.
-
- When you type QUIT, the system will return to wherever in the system you
- came from.
-
- Enhancements in the works:
- At DISPOSITION:
- * Repeat option
- * Immediate reply
-
- For SCAN or READ:
- * By ID code
- * By Reference
-
- For SEND:
- * Return Receipt request
- * Return Reply request
- * Delayed sending by date
- * Passwords for multiple
- user accounts.

- TRADENET,PHX SYSTEM NEWS Feb 1984
- --------------------------------------
- 10 Feb In these days of rising costs,
- TRADENET is compelled to find
- ways to hold down costs when-
- ever and wherever possible.
-
- Consequently, effective 29 Feb
- 1984, TYMNET service to TRADE-
- NET will be discontinued. The
- alternate service selected is

- the first (partial) upgrades
- on 6 Feb (implemented 8 Feb)
- which were promised Nov'83.
- We were hedging our bet that
- these upgrades would be in
- last month. So what does all
- this mean to you --- read on
- to Jan's listing of services
- and apply them to this month!
- ***** That's all folks! *****
